About Course
Higher education professionals, including faculty, instructional designers, adjuncts, and administrators, face unprecedented career instability and transition pressures due to significant enrollment declines, institutional mergers, and closures—trends accelerating each year (Chronicle of Higher Education, 2023). Over 60% of contingent faculty currently report severe burnout and job insecurity (AAUP, 2023). For many professionals navigating a potential career transition, the challenge isn’t just updating a resumé; it’s redefining how they want to be seen.
Traditional career services often overlook the deeper work of clarifying one’s values, professional identity, and personal brand narrative. As a result, individuals may struggle to pursue aligned opportunities or communicate their worth beyond academia. Higher education professionals often face a crisis of identity and diminished self-confidence, with professional worth closely tied to titles such as “Professor” or “Doctor,” institutional prestige, or tenure status. Without structured opportunities to reframe their identity and build confidence, they may undervalue their transferable expertise, stalling momentum during career transition points.
This highlights the need for targeted career transition support, beyond generic coaching methods, addressing professional identity, values clarification, and strategic personal branding tailored specifically to the HigherEd context.
Target Audience
Faculty, instructional designers, adjuncts, and administrators experiencing or anticipating career transitions within or outside higher education, seeking clarity on their professional identity, values, and effective personal branding.
Opportunity
This project proposes a distinct two-module program focused explicitly on identity-driven personal branding, combining psychological grounding with practical branding tools uniquely tailored to higher education professionals. Unlike traditional coaching approaches that predominantly utilize generic assessments (e.g., Myers-Briggs, CliftonStrengths), this program emphasizes deep identity reflection, values clarification, narrative articulation, and future-oriented branding aligned specifically to the HigherEd context.
Participants will emerge not merely with greater self-awareness, but with clear, actionable personal branding strategies uniquely suited to their professional aspirations and the rapidly changing landscape of higher education.
Program Description
The program consists of two complementary modules designed to sequentially guide participants from internal identity exploration to external professional branding:
